Replies to NYJC Comments
Someone got me into tomorrow.sg... hurray!
I just wanted to reply to some of the comments I got on my post abt the proposed college name-change... from my beloved Nanyang JC, to CCJC.
No. 1:
most importantly, is how society views us in general, whether we can instil a stronger bond between the secondary skool juniors and college seniors, which i can tell you, is lacking in NYJC-to-cchsm/cchsb, compared to RJC-to-RI/RGS, VJC-to-VS, etc...
and the 1st step to go, is to change the name, a common entity.juz a general comment. dun need to flame me over this
What secondary school juniors and college seniors?
Yes there is RJC-RI/RGS and VJC-VS... but we've never really had any bonds with CCH Main/Branch. The only real common entity is that we have the same school management.
And no, I dun believe in flaming... you only do that when you wanna have a BBQ.

doesn't mean that the name "chung cheng" is cheena pong and ought to be frowned upon isn't it?

it isnt a bad idea to change the name to Chung Cheng JC. Afterall the name NYJC is confusing since NYJC is not related to NYGH and is affiliated to Chung Chung instead.
I suppose if you look at it based on affiliation, then yes, we should be renamed CCJC.
But that's, in the opinion of many former students, not a good enough reason to change the name.
NYJC started out in 1978 as NYJC... we have a long and established history. If affiliation was really THE thing, then they should have changed the name donkey years ago.

I'm a felow ex old girl of CCHS main and I ain't in favour of the move either. We've got enough Chung Chengs attached to us.. no need for Nanyang JC as well.

You just helped me prove a point... Chung Cheng and Nanyang have never really had a link.
When you look at the 2 Chung Chengs' websites... there's no mention of NY.
In the NYJC handbook, there's a small sentence that states that NYJC 'is a govt-aided college which has 2 affiliated schools, Chung Cheng (High) and Chung Cheng (Branch)' and that's about it. Our college crest, philosophy and motto is not the slightest bit similar to that of CC.
Most of the world knows that ACS boys tend to move on to ACJC and that RI/RGS tends to go to RJC. VS boys normally end up in VJC and a large number of students from Chinese High, Nanyang Girls, Chinese Girls go to Hwa Chong... even if that doesn't really happen in real life, it is assumed to be as such because well, people have always linked those schools together.
What about NYJC? From what I recall, you dun get many Chung Cheng people moving on to NYJC.. in fact, I think many go to TJC or TPJC. In NYJC, you get the St. Grab, Monfort, Maris Stella, Catholic High boys, convent girls from Paya Lebar Met. girls, and CHIJ, and then there's AMK sec, AI, Mayflower, Bowen...
At most a very small number of Chung Cheng people... something which doesn't really speak volumes about our 'affiliation'.
I mean, let's face it... our affiliation is really only as a result of us having the same school management. History and school culture-wise, zero. Yeah sure, I remember the student council having to go over to provide free labor to CCH(M) before for their Speech day.. but err, I don't think that's reason enough for a name change.
Chung Cheng has their history and traditions and cultures... Nanyang JC has its own. Both have never really been related and in fact, I don't think that many NYJCians know NY's affiliated to Chung Cheng.
