7% GST = less money for middle class.

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/241058/1/.html

"Mr Lee explained that the hike was necessary to finance the enhanced social safety nets, needed to help the lower income group and he emphasised that the offset package would more than counter the rise in GST. "

Ok, so we're now supposed to be an inclusive society, make sure the poor receive the help they need - though only if they'll help themselves first, we dun wanna become welfare state. We now need more money coz you all wanna have more social programs for the poor, right? So we take more money from all of you lor!

Nevermind that we could actually take just a little bit more from our GDP and use it for the people.
The government now spends only 15 percent of its GDP - one of the lowest in the world.

But don't worry... the government said that it will have an offset package to help people deal with the increase in GST.

I can't wait to hear what sort of package it'll be on Budget Day, man. Another $200 Progress Package perhaps? How useful! :P:P:P

Maybe we can reclaim GST... the way tourists do it. Bring your income tax statement thingy to the counter, and we'll refund you the GST if you're poor enough.

Or perhaps, we could actually have higher income taxes for the high-income groups... you know, the many new millionaires in Singapore now?
