That lump at the side of my gum was getting really really painful today. It was a pain that stretched along the jaw, down to the neck. I couldn’t even brush my hand against that side of my face, touch my cheek, coz that’ll hurt.
It reached the point where I had to grab a cold soft drink can and rest it against my cheek.
I hate dentists… granted I’ve never had nightmare experiences with them when I was young, but still, I just dun like them. I still remember the gross sandy grainy thing they used to use to clean my teeth – I’ll imagine accidentally swallowing it and getting poisoned. So after I left primary school, I never went to see a dentist again. Ever. I never had the need to do so – my teeth are ok, thank God.
But now… it looked like a trip to the dentist was unavoidable.
Another thing I hate… medical sort people who nag at you about your vices. So I’m a smoker, but it’s my bloody body, and gums… of course I know what happens to the body when you smoke – MOH does a good job reminding me – but that’s my problem.
But the dentist just went on and on and on. In the beginning, when he looked into my mouth, he started tsking and moaning about what a bad state my insides are, like as though all my teeth have fallen out like that. Then he proceeded to paint me a doomsday scenario of what’ll happen if I continue smoking.
But after he did an x-ray and took a closer look at the insides, he had to admit that it was THAT bad… that it was a gum infection which just needed antibiotics and that perhaps I should get my teeth cleaned (which I did agree, considering how I haven’t done anything to them since I was 12).
And then he sent me off with 50 bucks worth of drugs. Thankfully, one of them was a rather effective painkiller.
So I’m feeling better now… still kinda irritated, but at least I’m not walking around with an ice pack to my cheek.
Oh, by the way… I’ve signed up for a gym membership…
Lol, I know some of you are thinking, ‘for what??? Your estate got gym what!’
No, I’ve not won the lottery or something… I just decided I needed to have a hobby, something to do regularly… and by making it exercise, I’ll be killing two birds with one stone – having a hobby, and losing weight, and God knows I need to lose weight.
And this membership Nis found us, is quite good. They’ve a number of outlets where the members aren’t the picture-perfect, ‘you-dun-fucking-need-a-gym-with-that-bod’ sort. I prefer that, coz as confident as I try to be, I can still feel intimidated by such people in a gym, especially when they strut around in expensive branded sportswear like they’re doing the catwalk instead of exercising. Like, why spend so much on clothes you’re gonna soak with sweat??? If I’m gonna spend money on nice clothes, hell I’m not going to exercise in them. A big comfy tee and shorts is good for exercise, and really helps facilitate movement.
Maybe I’m just a lowly being without the ability to buy brands… someone who doesn’t understand the mentality of you rich high-class silly people.
Anyway… and the gyms are well-equipped, they conduct group sessions with interesting classes like stepxercise, kickboxing, dancing, yoga… so I wun get bored. They even have aqua-aerobics!
Their changing rooms are lovely, with lockers and a sauna and steamroom… and ya, their members seem decent. Normal people like myself… working types…
Plus, there was an offer! So we got the membership cheaper than usual. Lol... so while i do have to be more prudent with my spending now, at least i dun have to sell an arm and a leg. and when the wallet hurts, u're even more determined to get ur money's worth!
So now Nis and I have plans to fully utilize our membership… it’s good to have a partner so we can motivate each other to go for classes etc..
Lalala… I just need to find my track shoes… I have this sinking suspicion that i lost them when moving house… fuck, that means I need to dig out money from some hole to buy shoes.
Stay tuned for the latest episode of ‘SgFairy’s weight fight!”

And the birthday candles went out
So this is what a 24th birthday feels like eh?
I’ve a lump on the side of my gums which is aching like hell and making it really uncomfortable for me… I’ve had 2 meetings, back to back this later afternoon stretching into night…
24th doesn’t feel very nice.
But then again, I’ve never had huge birthday celebrations, save for the one I had in kindergarten (but it doesn’t count since I was a little girl then and little girls should have at least one such party) and my 21st birthday – which I think my parents did coz you’re supposed to, for your children’s 21st.
So wtf… it’s reached the stage when it’s just another day… only, you give urself a wider smile in the mirror.
But he did bring me out for a drink after the meetings… :P so he forgot my birthday, but oh well, lol, from the looks of it, it’s something I’m gonna have to get used to for the years ahead… but at least he was nice to me, and when I told him it was my birthday (ya I know, thick skinned, but it was a busy day and I was looking for some sympathy), he apologized. He could have just gone, “so?”
And though I only got home after 11pm, the moment I stepped into the door, a birthday cake was brought out, with 2 candles, and the family sang me the birthday song. This even though my bro had school the next day (he’s the sort who must get his beauty sleep) and my dad looked like he needed sleep too.
Guess the family’s not too bad too…
Now to tackle the new year…

881
Brought my mum to see 881 today… I had gone to watch it some days earlier with Nis and totally loved it. I was determined to drag my mum down for it… Hokkien blood runs through her veins, and her family background’s such that she would be familiar with all the getai etc…. how can resist a Hokkien musical dramady?
Where to start… to explain why 881 is going to be the new addition of my ‘Favourite Movies’ list in Friendster…
As a story, it’s entertaining… on one hand it’s very funny, and it has its extremely corny moments (begging the Getai Goddess for super singing powers… and who can forget the laser-shooting durian bras). On the other hand, it’s very moving… crying-buckets-of-tears sort of touching.
Also, I’m a sucker for dialect movies, especially if the subtitles are very accurate. I mean, hey, I’m losing touch with my ethnic roots here in SG – I blame the ‘speak mandarin’ campaign. Plus, the conversations are very real, very ‘daily-life’. And there wasn’t really any of the ‘it’s the gahmen lah!’ sort of speeches jack neo is well-known for. How many times can you take lamentations about the gahmen, I ask you?
Then there are the songs. Lovely lovely pieces… of course Hokkien songs are generally very depressing – it’s either about the lack of money, parents ill-treating the kid, a woman struggling to survive in the prositution line, or health problems. But still, in this day and age where songs generally do lack depth and are soooo boring, it was refreshing.
The costumes were breath-taking. I’ve always secretly dreamt about wearing clothes full of sequims, with feathers in my hair… that sort of drag-queen look. And the main leads looked very nice indeed, though I must say I thought one of their outfits (the kindergarten flower petal band around the face) was a little gross, lol. I can’t name a favourite costume, but I did particularly like the Egyptian outfit and the finale white piece.
Cinematography. I’m no expert in that field, but I think Roystan Tan did very well in using the right camera angles etc to really bring out the essence of the story. And oh man, especially the last part in the hospital where one of the girls was dying… sob sob… so powerful. What made it even more touching was the sort of scenes which took place prior to the death scene… seemingly normal conversations, nothing like the loud wailing Taiwanese mourning type… it made everything feel somewhat more real.
So yes, 881 did leave a really deep impression on me. And after the movie, my mum was like, “why you.. sob sob.. bring me to watch… sob sob… this kind of movie? I thot it’s a fun thing! But… sob sob.. see lah! Now I cannot lift my face.. sob sob.. to walk ard in public, wait… sob sob… ppl see my red nose!”
Anyway... here's my favourite song from the movie... i'm so going to memorise it. Me, memorise a Chinese-Hokkien song?!?! ya, that's how much i like it. and i'm going to get the movie song cd too!
